-Rules for Moving

Rules for Moving

by Nancy Star

Lane is a local advice columnist, but her life is a mess right now. She is suffering from childhood trauma for constantly moving. Her husband decided to leave her before he died in a drunk-driving accident. Her son, Henry is not talking to anyone but her. Lane has to do something to put everything together and help her son to talk again.

She decides to move to a new house in New Jersey. The house needs construction, and Lane’s mom, Sylvia, suddenly shows up with no explanation. So, Nathan, her landlord offers her to spend their summer in his summer home on Martha’s Vineyard until the house is fixed.

Lane's journey to help her son speak again, put her past behind, and move forward is a difficult but heartwarming story. an uplifting and emotional mother and son story, with a confusing choice of characters. Henry was adorable, I loved him, and I admire how the author portrayed his personality and his thoughts. A perfectly textured character. but Lane was the character that I struggled throughout the book to connect with. I was not able to understand her issues

Overall, I enjoyed this novel and the bond between Lane and Henry.

- More Than A Woman

More Than a Woman

by Caitlin Moran

This book hooked me right from the beginning. I was so excited to read a book about women that was able to include every single problem that a modern woman deals with daily. This story is a funny memoir and at the same time covers important topics that need lots of attention. Its main focus is on middle-aged women, it addresses some serious matters and delves into important issues that almost all women are dealing with issues that so many of us may not have taken notice before reading this book.

I found the writing style genuinely enjoyable, fun, and engaging. It was like the author tried to break the pattern by comically looking into major issues.

It's a book that I have to read again, it made me feel I should rethink some issues and look into them with more attention, while it made me laugh at the same time.

- The Silent Conspiracy

The Silent Conspiracy

(Jack Logan #2)

by L.C. Shaw

This is the second book of the Jack Logan Series. I haven’t read the first book “The Network” but this book can be read as a stand-alone.

Taylor and Jack are getting used to their life together parenting Evan, Taylor’s son. Taylor is a media freelancer who is focusing on interviewing families whose insurance claims were rejected. And jack is investigating a series of random suicides and murders. They come together and begin to make connections between their discoveries and link up their stories to solve this case. they come to realize that Damon Cross, Evan’s biological father (from the previous book) has faked his death and is roaming freely pursuing something in Jack and Taylor’s life.

This was a thriller full of actions and tensions. A fast-paced, gripping, and suspenseful story. Although the story can be read as a stand-alone, I was a bit confused as at points it was tied back to the first book.

The storyline was very interesting and twisty, I was able to connect with the textured characters.

I do recommend to thriller readers and I recommend that they read book one as well.

Eli’s promise is Eli’s story from Lubin Poland to his life in DP camp and eventually to Chicago to find the mean who broke his promise after 25 years and watch him pay for his crime.

This book was an emotional read for me with fully developed characters. The storyline is uniquely penned. I appreciate Autor’s ability to describe the details and how his writing helps you connect with characters and feel their emotions.

Eli’s Promise is a rich, powerful, and emotional novel that does not disappoint you. If you like Historical fiction then you will enjoy reading this book.

- The beat Match

The Beat Match (Showmen, #3)

by Kelly Siskind

This is my second book written by this author and I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed the first one.

It is an amazing friend to the lovers’ story. We read about Annie who has lost her mother due to drug overdose and then her brother which cause her to be depressed and alone. This is when Wes, his brethren’s best friend, tries to be there for her, but she finds it very annoying that he acts too protective towards her.

Life is not easy for any of them, they are each dealing with their own problems, get to know each other’s secretes and after all these, they realize that they have fallen in love with each other.

It is a very well written book, I liked the storyline and the characters, I have to admit that Wes is the most loving person and I was able to connect with both characters easily.

If you are looking for a fast-paced and feel-good book with lovable characters, then this is a book for you.

- Lily Rose

Lily Rose

by Deborah Robinson

A heartbreaking true story based on its author's life.

Lily Rose is a thought-provoking and captivating Novel.

The story has a dual timeline and alternates between past and present. Lily Rose grew up with her loving adopted family. And moves to leave with her uncle and aunt in a huge farm after her parents die. Her dream, when she was in high school, was to go to New York City. Once she gets there, she gets a job as a fashion director for one of the most prestigious department stores and ends up marrying the owner.  Lily becomes very successful in the fashion industry. But it won't take long until her marriage becomes abusive and she experiences a serious depression. At the height of her frustration, she remembers a piece of paper that her aunt gave her when she was leaving the farm. And it reminds her that this paper has her birth mother's name written on it. This is when she decides to look for her birth mother.

The storyline was beautifully created by the author. The characters and descriptions were perfectly penned. The details were vividly described. And I was able to connect with Lily easily.

Knowing that it was the author's life story made this book more exciting for me. I really enjoyed the prologue. It made me want to read the book right away. And the last chapter Was also very touching for me.

-The Moon is Missing

The Moon is Missing

by Jenni Ogden

The Moon Is Missing, is a powerful and beautifully written mother-daughter story.

The story starts in London where we get to know Georgia. Georgia Grayson is on leave from performing operations because of her recent panic attacks. She is a neurosurgeon and is a director in a large hospital. She is married to Adam and is mother to Lara and Finbar.

Lara, her 15-year-old daughter’s Social Studies assignment leads her to ask Georgia about her biological father. Danny was a musician from New Orleans who died before she was born.

Georgia has to attend a conference in New Orleans and take Lara with her hoping to find answers to Lara’s question, not knowing that 4 days later hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans.

It was a profoundly touching story about family, life tragedies, hope, and secrets. I found the story mostly focusing on relationships. Lara and Georgia relationship that suffers because of past secrets. As well as Adam and Georgia’s affected by her panic attacks.

The change of location (London, New Orleans, and New Zeland) was remarkably interesting for me. The author’s ability to describe the details is admirable, especially the vivid description of New Orleans.

I liked the characters and how they developed throughout the story. They were are relatable. I also enjoyed the writing style and how the storyline was penned.

I would recommend this book to those enjoying a family drama.

- When No One is Watching

 When No One is Watching

by Alyssa Cole

Sydney return home after her divorce only to find out her beloved neighborhood in

Brooklyn is going through several changes and gentrification.

Her neighbors are moving out of their houses without any goodbyes or notice. It seems like they move out at the same time that white families move in.

She is planning to host a walking tour of the neighborhood in the next block party. With the help of Theo, she is doing some research to prepare for the tour.

While doing their research about the neighborhood they uncover some disturbing and terrifying information that they can hardly understand.

I must admit that this was one of the most uncomfortable and heartbreaking books I have ever read. The first half of the book is about racism and gentrification. A captivating look into our real-life problems. Problems that exist and no one care to do anything about it.

I appreciate Alyssa Cole for the amount of time and research she dedicated to writing the 75% part of this book. after reading it, I was so touched by the story that I had to research Brooklyn Gentrification history myself.

As for the thriller part of the book, which was the last 15% of the book, it was not for me. I could not connect with the thriller part of the story. My rating for this section of the book will be 3.

Overall, I found this a very well-written story, for the first 75% of the book I connected with the characters, and the details were vividly explained. I could easily imagine the neighborhood layout.

It is a sinister and thought-provoking story that I recommend others to read it. I would choose Historical fiction as the genre not a thriller though.

Have you ever read a book that is not the genre that you expected? How do you rate books like this?

The Fourteenth of September

 The Fourteenth of September

by Rita Dragonette

Fourteenth of September is a touching and suspenseful story about 19-year-old Judy Talton

It's the fall of 1969, Judy's mother who is an army nurse forces her to join the army during one of the most tumultuous challenging years of the   Vietnam war. She has saved her money for years to go to college and it was because of her mother's encouragement that she applied for the ROTC scholarship to become a nurse. Now she has to make personal choices between her army scholarship and anti-Vietnam war protest.

Young men will be drafted into the army when the lottery is drawn and the ones with the lowest numbers on their birthday will be chosen. Judy’s birthday is on the first and she thinks if she were a man, she would be the first to be sent to Vietnam. Being pulled into different directions by her family and her integrity during this hectic time, she doesn’t know what she is going to lose!

I appreciate the author's effort to describe vivid descriptions of the events and Judy’s college life.  Judy’s mature way of thinking was captivating, and I really liked the author's creativity to create complex and developed characters.

- Florence Adler Swims Forever

 Florence Adler Swims Forever

by Rachel Beanland

The story is about Florence and Fannie, who spend their summers above their parent’s bakery. Fannie is staying at the hospital to be supervised due to her high-risk pregnancy.

Gussie, Fannie's daughter, is pending the summer with her aunt Florence and her grandparents, while her mother is at the hospital. But a tragic event changes everything that's summer. We get to know different characters and so many secrets through the story.

This is a beautifully written novel. I could smell and hear the ocean reading this book. The brilliant and glowing description of the landscape made the story more appealing and tangible for me.

A perfectly constructed story with normal and not perfect characters, just like all of us , who are not always making the right decision.

The characters are complex but relatable at the same time. The pace and plot are perfectly and strongly written.

Knowing that this story is based on a true story, made the story more interesting.

This is one of the best books I have read this year and I recommend it to everyone.

- Invisible Girl

Invisible Girl

By Lisa Jewel

Another Heart-pounding psychological thriller. By Lisa Jewel.

In this story we get to know Cate who is married to Roan with two kids, is a physiotherapist. We will know about Saffyre Maddox who was Roan's patient (Roan is a child psychologist) and Owen Pick, who is a teacher in his thirties and lives with his aunt.

The story begins with a young girl goes missing, with no trace left behind , and now all three families are connected to each other in ways to solve this mystery.

It is a multiple POV story with complex and tormented and unusual characters. All characters are very well-defined, each enhancing the story more. Perfectly penned details make the plot intense and shocking. The characters and plot that are weaved amazingly, makes this story an engaging, believable and fast pace thriller. Each chapter adds more detail and layer to the previous ones. It was a perfect thriller for me, and I do recommend this mind-numbing mystery to those who enjoy mystery and thriller.
