The Women in Black
by Madeleine St John
The
book is set in 1950’s in Sydney and Focuses on the loneliness and boredom of
three department store employees.
Magda,
Patty, Fay and Lisa are all working as sales assistant in a department store
named Goode’s. where all sales assistant must wear black. Each suffers from
enduring sadness and misery of some sort.
Magda,
(my favorite character) is in her forties. She is a glamorously stylish
Slovenian immigrant who supervises the one of a kind fancy and high-priced
dress department. Magda, unlike others get to wear her own black dresses. She
is married to a Hungarian and she has a strong social network.
Lisa,
whose real name is Lesley, a name she detests. Lisa is sixteen years old and
wants to go to university. Magda helps Lisa and introduces her to a life she
has never known existed. With Magdas magical taste in fashion Lisa goes through
a remarkable transformation.
Patty
who is unhappily married and her life seems in a bit of a rut. Her husband is
inarticulate and seemingly insensitive
Fay
a woman is eagerly looking for love and marriage. That ends up meeting refo
Rudi who is a cultivated Hungarian.
The
book starts slow but gradually becomes very interesting. The novel presents
glimpses of these women’s Personal life.
This
book was originally published in 1993 and the s made to a movie called “Ladies
in Black “and was released on September 20 2018, receiving several awards.
